The Cloth

The mills decide the price.
The cloth decides the suit.

Bunches from the great mills, kept in one room in Worli where you choose by hand — in weights picked for this city, not for a catalogue.

The cloth room

Cloth few hands are given to hold.

The house buys from the mills a tailor trusts with his name — Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Dormeuil, Holland & Sherry — and keeps the bunches in the atelier where you can hold them, because cloth is chosen by hand and against skin, never from a photograph.

For this city

Weights chosen for Bombay as much as for the occasion.

A cloth that behaves in Milan can sulk in Mumbai. The house stocks high-twist worsteds that shrug off humidity, fresco that breathes through April, linens for the season this city actually has, and flannels for the two weeks it pretends to have another one.

Evening cloth — barathea, midnight herringbone — is kept for black tie, and jacquards and raw silks for the wedding wardrobe.

Choosing

Ten minutes in the room beats an hour of scrolling.

You will be shown less, not more — a shortlist the house already believes in for your commission, your climate and your life. Handle them, hold them to the light, drape them on the shoulder. The right bolt announces itself.

If what you want is not in the room, the house will bring it in.

Asked in the cloth room

Which mills do you carry?

Loro Piana, Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Dormeuil, Holland & Sherry among them — and honest workhorse worsteds when the brief calls for duty over romance.

Can I bring my own cloth?

Yes. Bring the length, and the house will tell you honestly whether it deserves to be cut. You are quoted for the making alone.

What should a first suit be cut from?

A mid-weight navy or grey worsted — twelve months of the year, every room in the city. The second suit is where the wardrobe begins to say something.

Cloth becomes garment in The Making — the order of work, unhurried.
